The hearing test

What we actually test, and what each one feels like

A full hearing assessment is not one test but several, and none of them hurt. Here is each one, what it measures, and how long it takes.

  • PTA

    Pure-tone audiometry

Finds the quietest sound you can hear at each pitch, from 125 Hz up to 8 kHz. This is the test that produces your audiogram.

Headphones on in a quiet room. You press a button whenever you think you hear a beep, even if you are not sure.

    15 to 20 minutes

  • SPEECH

    Speech audiometry

Measures how many words you can correctly repeat back, which is a different question from whether you can detect a beep.

We say words at different volumes and you repeat them. Some will be easy, some will be guesswork. Both tell us something.

    5 to 10 minutes

  • TYMP

    Tympanometry

Checks that the eardrum and middle ear move as they should, which separates a blockage from a nerve problem.

A soft tip rests in the ear and changes the air pressure slightly for a few seconds. It feels like the pressure change on a plane.

    About 2 minutes

  • OTO

    Video otoscopy

A camera look inside the ear canal and at the eardrum, shown on a screen you can see too.

Nothing goes deep and nothing touches the eardrum. Often this is where a problem turns out to be wax rather than hearing loss.

    2 to 3 minutes

  • SCREEN

    Hearing screening

A quick pass or refer check rather than a full measurement. Used for children, and for anyone who just wants to know whether to worry.

Short and simple. For younger children it is turned into a game so they respond without realising they are being tested.

    About 10 minutes

  • TINN

    Tinnitus pitch matching

Finds the frequency and rough loudness of the ringing you hear, so any sound therapy can be aimed at the right place.

We play tones until you tell us one sounds like the sound in your ears. There is no right answer, only your answer.

    10 to 15 minutes

You will not need all six. Which we use depends on your ears, your age and what you have come in about. The whole visit is usually about an hour.

Hearing aid styles

Will anyone notice it?

This is the first thing most people want to know. Here are the six styles we fit, drawn at their real sizes relative to each other.

  • BTE

    Behind the ear

Sits behind the ear with a thin tube into the canal. The most powerful option and the easiest to handle if your fingers are stiff.

    Visible from behind

  • RIC

    Receiver in canal

A slim body behind the ear joined to the canal by a wire thinner than a noodle. The most common first choice.

    Barely visible

  • ITE

    In the ear

Custom made from a mould of your ear and fills the outer bowl. Nothing sits behind the ear at all.

    Visible from the side

  • ITC

    In the canal

Smaller, and sits at the opening of the canal rather than in the bowl of the ear.

    Hard to notice

  • CIC

    Completely in canal

Sits inside the canal. Only a small pull-cord shows, and only if someone is looking for it.

    Almost hidden

  • IIC

    Invisible in canal

Sits deepest of all. Suits mild to moderate loss and a canal wide enough to take it.

    Not visible

Smaller is not automatically better. How small you can go depends on your hearing test and the shape of your ear canal, and a very small aid cannot push as much power. We will tell you honestly which of these will work for you.

Do you need a hearing test?

These are the same six questions we ask when someone walks in. Tick the ones that sound like you.

Do you need a hearing test?

0 of 6 ticked

Nothing ticked yet.

Tick anything that sounds familiar and this will change. If none of them apply, you probably do not need a test right now.

This is not a diagnosis. Only a hearing test can tell you what is actually happening, and it is the only way to know which sounds you are missing.

Brands we fit

Eight manufacturers, no favourites

We are an independent centre, not a single-brand showroom. Which hearing aid we suggest comes from your audiogram, your ear canal and your budget, not from who pays the best commission.

Common questions

What people ask before they come in

Should I bring someone with me?

Yes, if you can. A husband, wife, son or daughter who talks to you every day often notices things you have stopped noticing, and it helps to have a second person hear the results. It also means someone else knows how to look after the hearing aid.

Is the hearing test painful?

No. You sit in a quiet room wearing headphones, listen for very soft tones, and press a button or raise your hand when you hear one. Then you repeat some words back. Nothing is inserted into your ear and nothing touches the eardrum.

Will people be able to see my hearing aid?

That depends on the style. A behind-the-ear aid is visible from behind. A receiver-in-canal aid is very hard to spot. Completely-in-canal and invisible-in-canal aids sit inside the ear canal and are not visible unless someone looks into your ear. How small you can go depends on your hearing test and the width of your canal, and we will tell you honestly which styles will work for you.

Do I need one hearing aid or two?

If both ears have hearing loss, two. Your brain works out which direction a sound came from by comparing what the two ears receive, and with only one aid that comparison breaks down, which makes noisy places harder rather than easier. If only one ear is affected, one is enough.

How much do hearing aids cost?

There is a wide range, because the price depends on the style, the manufacturer and how much processing the aid does in noisy places. Rather than quote a number here that goes out of date, call or send a WhatsApp to 0300-9359652 and we will tell you what is currently available in your range. We will also tell you if a cheaper model would suit you just as well.
