Tinnitus help

Tinnitus: treatment for ringing and buzzing in the ears

Tinnitus is the sound you hear when there is no sound around you: ringing, buzzing, hissing or a high whine. It is very common and it can be treated. We start by testing your hearing, because tinnitus and hearing loss usually travel together, then build a programme around sound therapy and, where it helps, hearing aids with a built-in masker.

In plain language

What this is

Tinnitus is hearing a sound that is not there: ringing, buzzing, hissing, a high whine, sometimes a pulse. It is not a disease in itself. It is a symptom, and most often a symptom of hearing loss, which is why the first step is always a hearing test rather than a prescription.

The usual explanation is that when the ear stops sending a frequency to the brain, the brain turns up its own gain looking for it, and what you hear is that internal gain. It follows that giving the brain the missing frequency back, through a properly programmed hearing aid, often quietens the ringing on its own.

Come and see us if

  • You hear ringing or buzzing when a room goes quiet, especially at night.
  • It has been there for weeks or months rather than hours.
  • It is making it hard to fall asleep or to concentrate.
  • It started after a loud noise, an illness, or a change in medication.

Worth knowing

Sudden hearing loss in one ear, tinnitus that pulses in time with your heartbeat, or ringing with dizziness should be seen quickly rather than booked for next month. Call us and say so, or see a doctor.
